CURRYING FAVOUR

I AM GRATEFUL TO COLOURFUL MP KHALID MAHMOOD, the reliable and trustworthy Labour Party member for Birmingham Perry Barr, pictured above entertaining some friends over dinner. When Mr Mahmood actually can be found in this country and in his constituency, he has been serving both democracy and Islamic Law on and off as he has seen fit for the past twenty years. For many people the mention of his name will only bring about thoughts of expenses fiddling, absenteeism and bigamy, but he is also an enlightening voice on issues of importance to Britain involving our Oriental policy.

MY GRATITUDE, HOWEVER, is not due to his being any one of these things, but for him having used the expression “curry favour” when explaining why our good Prime Minister has been criticizing Pakistan during his visit to India. If I had been the first to use the phrase, wagging fingers would have appeared in front of my eyes.

WHATEVER THE EXPRESSION ONE USES, questions must be asked about what David “Clive of India” Cameron is up to on the subcontinent and whether he understands that tens if not hundreds of thousands of Conservative voters are from Pakistan or of Pakistani origin. No doubt he has worked out that money from a few Indian multi-millionaires is more important than votes in unemployment holes in the north of England. But when I heard him state yesterday that the “new special relationship was Britain and India” I almost spluttered my Darjeeling Himalaya.
